GIORNO 2  CIRCOLO D´ORO

Colazione in hotel.

The Golden Circle tour allows you to visit some of Iceland‘s most stunning sights; Geysir geothermal area, the waterfall Gullfoss, and the UNESCO site Þingvellir National Park as well as to learn about growing vegetables in a country which doesn’t get much daylight for most of the year.

Geysir geothermal area is in South Iceland, near Laugarvatn Lake. The area is named after the biggest, and now mostly dormant, geyser Geysir and all geysers in the world owe their name to it. The biggest attraction today is the active Strokkur, which shoots up a column of water up to 30 metres (98 ft.) into the air every few minutes.

Gullfoss is one of the most famous waterfalls in Iceland and rightly so. The three-step waterfall is a part of the glacial river Hvítá and falls into a 62-metre (105 ft.) deep canyon. For the first half of the 20th century, there were ideas about using the waterfall to generate electricity, but thankfully nothing came of it.

The UNESCO site Þingvellir National Park is geologically and historically significant. Apart from being the location of the oldest parliament in the world, Alþingi, it is also a place where you can see the Mid-Atlantic ridge above ground. The Eurasian and North-American tectonic plates pull the country apart by a couple of centimetres per year.

Return to Reykjavik

Tour duration: 09:00 – 17:00

DAY 4  VIK REGION - SKAFTAFELL-JOKULSARLON-VIK REGION

Breakfast in the hotel.

Today you will head to the largest glacier in Europe, Vatnajökull and explore Skaftafell National Park. Visiting the park in winter is a real treat as you can see the tongues of the glacier spreading across the shore. Although surrounded by glaciers, the park is among the least snow-affected areas in Iceland due to southerly winds.

The landscape of Skaftafell is often compared to that of the Alps, it's up to you to make up your own mind. You will continue to the famous Jökulsarlon glacier lagoon where you will see luminous icebergs drifting by. Photo stop on Diamant beach then return to the hotel.

Overnight in the Klaustur Hotel /Fosshotel Nupar or similar (B)

GIORNO 5 FAREWELL

Breakfast in the hotel.

Today, return to the west and the capital. Short visit to the small town of Hveragerdi, a place known for its geological activity and hot steam rising from the ground. You will then discover the Reykjanes peninsula, the youngest and most southwestern part of Iceland.

On your return, visit the Lava Show where you will experience a miniature volcanic eruption by approaching a few meters from a real lava outpouring. Thanks to this unique experience, you will learn more about Icelandic geology and its extreme volcanic activity.

Overnight in the Fosshotel Reykjavik or similar (B)

GIORNO 4  DAY AT LEISURE

Breakfast in the hotel.

Departure towards the south coast of Iceland which is one of the locations of several scenes from the Game of Thones series.

The Seljalandsfoss waterfall will be your stop before continuing to Skogafoss, with a photo stop at Eyjafjallajökull volcano, which erupted in 2010.

The Skogafoss Waterfall is 60 meters, which the wind ripples and sometimes adorns itself with a magnificent rainbow. You will then visit the Ecomuseum of Skógar, where the wide collection offers a historical overview of the living conditions of Icelanders in this southern part of the island.

Then you will pass through Dyrholaey, which is the southernmost tip of Iceland, where the only cliffs on the south coast are located - the remnants of an ancient crater. On these cliffs, arches and peaks nest many seabirds and in particular puffins.

Finally, walk on the immense lunar beach of black sand of Reynisfjara, which stretches as far as the eye can see (the black sand comes from a gigantic volcanic eruption, which generated one of the most important lava flows of the last centuries), at the foot of basalt cliffs. The colour contrast is particularly striking in winter. Arrival in Vik at the end of the day and stop at the woolen clothing/accessory factory, an opportunity to buy some souvenirs.
